House Afternoon
On Friday 2nd of October 2015 all of the Year 7’s had a House afternoon to help us get to know the people in our House better. As there are 6 classes this year instead of 5, there are 6 children in all of the classes from each House. All 36 children from each House had their own area in the Sports Hall where they met. Brodie is now the Intermediate (Years 9 & 10) English Schools' Champion in the 100m backstroke. She also won bronze medals in the 100m fly and as part of the 4x100m medley relay team (swimming the backstroke leg). Her times in the individual backstroke & fly races also qualify her for the ASA National Short Course Championships in Sheffield in December, and her backstroke time of 1:03.23 puts her at the top of the 14 year old short course GB rankings. She's now looking forward to swimming in the DCHS Intermediate relay team at Watford today.

Sixth Form Lecture Series
This week's lecture was taken by Derek Matravers, who is a professor of philosophy at the Open Uni-versity with a particular interest in aesthetics and the philosophy of art. The talk started with an explanation of philosophy, which we were surprised to learn, is not capable of being defined. Mr Matravers then focused on the question “What is sight?”, challeng-ing the audience to consider the differences between seeing someone face to face, looking at your own reflection in the mirror, examining a drawing, observing a star through a telescope, and looking at an image in a photograph. All this highlighted the differ-ences between perception and representation – a fascinating, erudite and compelling subject.
Geography Field Trip
The Year 12 Geography class went on two trips this week, doing fieldwork to help us bring to life the begin-ning of our A Level course. On Monday we ventured down to the River Chess in Chesham, to study how the river and its characteris-tics change as it flows downstream. Those who have read the local news may be aware that currently, due to a lack of rain this year, the River Chess has dried up. This is a slight problem when it comes to measuring the velocity of a river when it is not physically there! Nonetheless, we were still able to gain a good understanding of what was going on in the channel- helped by the fact we could stand right in it. Although, when we did walk further into Chesham, and located where the river was flowing, we still went wading in, determined to collect our data, which we could later take back and analyse in the class. And Finally
A complaint overheard in my Computer Science class this week:
“I hate colons – just leave one out and the whole program goes wrong! I’m never using one in English again: it’s just too confusing”
