Netball

70 Year 7 girls attended the festive Christmas tournament, we had some very original team themes with sparkling costumes: Santa Banker, Clauses Family, Marvels, Winter Wonderland, Dominating Disney, Snazzy Santa Helpers, Rudolph, Ninjas and Oz were just a few!

A fantastic Christmas spirit with lots of fun and some good netball. Happy Christmas Year 7.

Ella Myers

Ella is in Year 8, she attended the Bible Project Presentation on Monday at the House of Lords and was presented with her prize by Baroness Cox. It was a great experience and we were reminded again that all the prize winners had done extremely well as there had been almost 3,000 entries from all over the country, so the competition this year had been extremely fierce. The project has been running for 25 years and the standard was increasing year on year.

Year 11 German Exchange December 2015

During the first week in December, Year 11 German students returned to our partner school Theodor Heuss Gymnasium in Dinslaken, Germany for the second leg of the exchange. We are celebrating our fifth year this year and this is a great time to visit, as it is the beginning of the “Adventzeit”, and Christmas festivities are well underway. The girls were able to attend lessons with their partners, help younger classes with their English, as well as meet students in a class of refugees and help teach them German. Trips out included the Film Museum Düsseldorf, Sea Life in Oberhausen and Phänomania in Essen ( a hands on extra sensory experience!) as well , of course, of trips to the Christmas markets to buy lots of goodies and presents. Once again, a fabulous trip and really beneficial in terms of language learning and cultural experiences. We look forward to planning for our current year 10 next year.

Frohe Weihnachten an alle und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr! Frau Coles

Art & Design

At DCHS we are regularly informed of art competitions which the girls are invited to enter. We have added a “Competitions & On-line exhibitions” sec-tion to the Art Gateway. It’s always worth visiting for any updates. Whilst we encourage the girls to be involved in these, the emphasis is on them being proactive and independent if they wish to enter.

Year 11 girls

in Study Skills this week have focused on how to manage the exams and after much debate these were the top 5 tips they all came up with:

 Read the question more than once

 Plan your answers

 Plan your time

 Sleep well ( and eat well)

 Relax and stay calm

Shop for Challoner's

is pleased to announce that the winners of the year 7 competition for December are 7L, and cakes have already been enjoyed by that form. There are two overall winners of what was a very close fought competition, as both 7A (the November winners) and 7L ended up with the same points in total. Both forms will be invit-ed to come to school in mufti on a day in January. Thank you to all the parents who supported the scheme. We hope you will continue to do so.

The total raised by everybody's orders in December was a record breaking £2,253 and the total for the term was £7,528. This will go towards the courtyard café project, from which all the girls will benefit.

Shop for Challoner's wishes all its supporters a very Happy Christmas and looks forward to receiving January orders very early in the new year - by Wednesday, 6th January.

Economics trip

The Economics students were invited to attend a conference held by UCL last Thursday to take part in a variety of lectures discussing different elements of economics such as the behavioural and financial side. Many students, especially 13D, enjoyed Beth Stratford’s talk on ecological economics looking at the economics of depleting resources and how the environment is at the centre of all decisions. The debate about Economic misconceptions was met with great enthusiasm and became very heated with students firing questions at the panel. The day was very valuable as we picked up some new concepts and ideas and we owe Mrs Glen a huge thank you for organising the day! Yasmin Muneer 13.6

Year 7 Hockey

Festive fun for our enthusiastic hockey players, a great team spirit and we are looking forward to 2016.

Happy Christmas.

Classical Society Winter Trip to Bath

Last weekend we embarked on a trip to the Christmas Markets and Roman Baths in Bath. While the coach trip was long, it was worth it as when we arrived as we were greeted by festive cheer and a tour around the Baths. After looking around the museum, we were released into the city. Going around in small groups, we visited the crowded Christmas Market and many of the high street shops. Miss Wright set a few photo competitions within categories like the best photo of a uni-corn. We all had a fabulous time, filled with mince pies and music. On the return journey, we had an unexpected bus rave to Fall Out Boy and we can’t wait to go again. Audrey, Annabel and Sarah (Year 10 Class Civilisation).

Year 9 Bazaar

On Thursday 17th December the Year 9’s ran the Year 9 Bazaar. Prior to the event the Year Captains had put in a huge amount of effort organising their forms and ensuring the day ran smoothly. The Bazaar was a great success and we all raised lots of money for our chosen House charities. There were a huge variety of stalls ranging from raffles to chocolate fountains. The chocolate fountain team raised over £100! The year 7’s and 8’s all really enjoyed the event, it was the year 7’s first experience of the bazaar! We can’t wait see what the current Year 8’s do next year and we wish them the best luck. By Jemima and Imogen 9N

Carol Service

Many thanks to all readers and musicians who contributed to a beautiful Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols in a candle-lit St Mary’s Church on Tuesday. Featuring well-loved traditional carols alongside less familiar settings for harp and upper voices by Anthony Bolton and John Rutter, it really was a superb formal celebra-tion of Christmas. The girls’ musicianship has really developed in the last year or so and their performances this evening were testimony to this. We are extremely proud of each and every one of them! Please visit our YouTube channel for recordings of this event and many others this term. Merry Christmas!

And Finally

Modern Languages says goodbye and Danke to Mrs Evans. Also thanks to our three lovely foreign language Assistants for a great term's work!
